Inspiring the next generation of conservation leaders at the UN Youth Australia National Conference 2026

NWSFTCP delivered an interactive session about innovation in marine turtle conservation at the UN Youth Australia National Conference.
The conference was held in Perth from 8-14 July 2026, bringing together young people from across Australia and New Zealand to explore the theme ‘Biodiversity as a priority for the international community in the 21st Century’.
Tristan Simpson and Shannon Pugh from the North West Shelf Flatback Turtle Conservation Program delivered a session to approximately 70 attendees, providing them with the opportunity to step into the metaphorical shoes of a research scientist and explore how scientific research contributes to the conservation of marine turtles.
Working through real-world examples of marine turtle research, participants considered questions such as:
- How does scientific research benefit the conservation of marine turtles?
- How do marine turtle scientists use technology and innovation to help them with their research?
- What steps would you take next to conserve marine turtles?
The event was a fantastic opportunity to connect with future leaders and share how innovation, technology and evidence-based decision-making are helping to safeguard marine turtles for generations to come.
