New Scitech exhibit highlights the impacts of light on turtles

September 2025

Scitech’s new Here, There and Everywhere gallery is showcasing how light pollution affects Western Australia’s wildlife and night sky.

Launched in September 2025, the Light Pollution exhibit invites visitors to experience how artificial light impacts our night sky and marine turtles. It represents a bold collaboration between Astrotourism WA, DBCA's North West Shelf Flatback Turtle Conservation Program, and Scitech.

Light pollution is the unnecessary and uncontrolled use of artificial light. It disrupts normal wildlife behaviours, affects the human sleep cycle, and hides our view of the stars.

The Light Pollution exhibit at Scitech immerses visitors on a beach in the Pilbara during turtle hatching season and uses interactive projection technology to demonstrate how light affects hatchlings. Exhibition visitors can experiment with using a central console to adjust the lighting levels in the exhibit and help hatchlings to navigate their way safely to the ocean.

Head over to Scitech these school holidays and experience it for yourself!
