Science Week Roadshow in the Kimberley

August 2025

This year for National Science Week, the NWSFTCP joined regional DBCA teams to deliver a Science Week Roadshow across the Kimberley!

Travelling to Kununurra, Wyndham, Broome and Derby, the teams delivered education about marine turtles, saltwater crocodiles and cane toads to hundreds of students and community members at several schools and public events over the week.

Exploring the National Science Week theme ‘Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language’, Clodagh from the NWSFTCP developed an activity around decoding turtle tracks. Students from Year 4 to 10 were challenged to observe characteristics and correctly identify images of turtle tracks to their species (flatback, green, loggerhead and hawksbill) to decode a secret sentence. It was a fun challenge that increased students' understanding of the different turtle species that nest across the WA coast.

A big thank you to all of the schools who participated, community members who attended, joint management partners at Yawuru Aboriginal Corporation, and the regional DBCA staff in Kununurra and Broome who supported and joined the Science Week Kimberley Roadshow this year.
