Tristan Simpson

Senior Environmental Officer

Tristan has worked for the North West Shelf Flatback Turtle Conservation Program (NWSFTCP) since 2020. His role includes working with partners and stakeholders to address threats identified to the North West Shelf flatback turtle and other marine turtle species. 

Having worked in conservation and environmental management across Australia and the world, Tristan effectively builds relationships with Traditional Owner, community, government, non-government and industry stakeholders to address issues such as fox management, artificial light pollution and the application of policy across Western Australia.

"The North West Shelf flatback turtle faces major threats across its distribution largely due to the extensive and expanding significant developments along the Pilbara coastline - we need to work together to find a balance and reduce their impacts."

 

Projects

  • Ongoing advice relating to DBCA's legislative responsibility to conserve and protect threatened marine turtles
  • Building stakeholder and partner collaboration to establish and enhance networks for greater conservation outcomes
  • Actively seeking avenues to work with other government departments to improve marine turtle conservation outcomes under their legislative remit e.g. contributing to DWER's Marine Fauna Technical Guidance Document
  • Managing the impacts of fox predation on flatback rookeries, including at Mundabullangana and Onslow
  • Working with various stakeholders to reduce artificial light pollution across the State
  • Contributing to the NWSFTCP Strategic Conservation Planning processes for threat management
