Engaging the next generation of marine scientists
The North West Shelf Flatback Turtle Conservation Program conducts career taster experiences at schools, facilitates and presents at careers events and hosts workplace learning students to support pathways for students into conservation and science.
Opportunities available
The Program has a “Career Taster Experience” that can be booked as a school incursion for students in Year 9 onwards, which explores the diverse range of marine science roles available at the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

“Speed-dating a scientist” for World Sea Turtle Day 2023
To celebrate World Sea Turtle Day and the incredible work marine scientists do, Year 9 students from four schools attended a marine science career taster at AQWA. Hosted by the NWSFTCP, there were 22 marine scientists at the event who set up stations around themes like “Turtle monitoring”, “Managing light pollution”, “Tracking sharks” to show the type of work they do. Students rotated between the stations, using their one-on-one time with the scientists to ask questions and understand what a career in marine science involves.
